Infrared Saunas

Everybody knows that traditional saunas work by heating the air around you to warm the surface of the skin, which then warms the underlying muscles and tissues. Too much time in a traditional sauna can cause heat-related exhaustion and dehydration. The average sauna can sit anywhere from 150˚F to 190˚F, whereas an infrared sauna operates at lower temperatures between 120˚F to 140˚F.

Infrared Saunas work differently though. Using infrared energy, these saunas directly heat the skin, tissues, and muscles without the need to dramatically warm the air around you. In these saunas, only about 20 percent of the heat goes to heat the air, while the other 80 percent directly heats your body. It avoids stifling the user with hot steam, allowing them to spend more time enjoying all the relaxation and health benefits that come with the experience, while also increasing their core body temperature by two to three degrees.

What are the Benefits of Infrared Heat?

Infrared heat is used and preferred by doctors to treat a variety of issues, and it can have incredible therapeutic benefits. Detoxifies the Body: Infrared heat is more detoxifying that traditional saunas, and studies have shown that infrared saunas help the body detoxify 20% of toxins instead of the 3%, which is average for a traditional saunas. You also only sweat out about 80% water in an infrared sauna, when traditional saunas cause you to sweat out 97%. Relieves Pain of Muscles and Joints: Infrared saunas can help with a variety of pain relief issues, including neck, back, and arthritis pain. Heat will help your muscles relax, which will alleviate the pain and stiffness that can accompany a tight muscle. Heat also encourages circulation and blood flow to muscles and joints.

Helps with Weight Loss: As you sweat inside an infrared sauna, you are losing calories! Because the infrared heat is heating up your body instead of the air, this causes cardiovascular conditioning for your heart. You’re literally getting a work out as you sit, and it’s really interesting to notice the change in heart-rate. A 30-minute sit can have you losing 200-600 calories!
Reduces Low Blood Pressure and Increases Circulation: Sitting in an infrared sauna reduces blood pressure and can help you manage stress better, and repeated treatment improves impaired blood vessel functions for people with high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. With infrared heat, the body responds like it’s receiving a workout, and blood circulation to vital areas in the body increase. This can assist in the resolution of Inflammatory cell infiltration, the swelling of the body caused through edema, and fluids that cause exudates.

Heals Replenishes Skin: Soothing heat is good for our skin, and open wounds, scars, burns, acne, and eczema can all be reduced with infrared heat. Regular usage also can help with wrinkles and cellulite, causing a firmer skin with a radiant glow.

There are no reports of negative effects so far, beyond the cautions about any sauna experience. Still, always be sure to keep in mind the possible dangers, including overheating, dehydrating, and interference with medications. If you are pregnant, have heart disease, or are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, those are other potential dangers to consider before starting treatment.
